The Doorbell Rang

Today we are working more on division. This means sharing between. Watch the video of the book, The Doorbell rang.

We are then going to solve some division problems from the book.

Your Learning Intention today is for mathematicians for be able to solve division problems.

To be successful, you must:

  • Work out how many cookies there are to start with.
  • Work out how many groups you must share them into.
  • Show how you worked it out.

Beginning the Inquiry Process

Today we have finished the Tuning In part of our Inquiry Process about water. Turn and Talk to a partner and explain one thing that you have learnt about water over the last 4 weeks.

Today we are going to give you your partners for Inquiry and you will start developing your Inquiry question. This term you will be expected to:

  • Have an Inquiry Question about saving water
  • Replicate a science experiment about water
  • Write a persuasive letter about saving water individually
  • Create a persuasive poster with your partner
  • Make a video about saving water

These are SOME of the experiments that we have done:

Some persuasive poster examples are:

Some examples of videos with kids talking about saving water are:

Observing

Today we are starting something new for reading – Observing. This is part of doing an OWI (Observe, Wonder and Infer).

When we observe, we simply look at what we can see in an image. We don’t think about what is happening at all, we simply look and state what we can see. It is important to include details about what we can see. For example, instead of saying, I see a girl in a dress, you might say, I see a girl in a long red dress with sparkly shoes. This gives us more information about what we can see in an image.

Look at the image below. What can you observe?

Learning Intention:

Good readers are able to observe an image.

Success Criteria:

-Explain what an observation is.

-State only things that you can see in the picture.

-Use details.

Global Water Issues

Today we are learning about Water Inequality. All over the world, people have a different amount of water that is available to them. In some countries, like Australia, we have access to clean water all day every day. In other countries, people do not have access to clean water. It may be dirty, or they may have to travel a long way to get water.

Group 1:

Watch the following video and then write 3 things that you have learnt from it in your book.

Group 2:

Read the information about Water in Developing Places. Look at pictures and read the text, and talk about what you have noticed and learnt.

Group 3:

Look at and write about the pictures which show different ways that people collect water. Write some things that you notice or think about the pictures.

Group 4:

Check out this website! I think that it looks lots of fun!

The Egyptian Pyramids

Group 5:

Trying to filter some dirty water and make it clean again.

Group 6:

Have a go at attempting to carry 10 kilograms of water!

What is the chance of…

Today we are learning more about chance. What is chance? What are some chance words that you remember?

In my bag here, I have 2 red lollies and 2 green lollies. What are the chances that I will pull out a yellow lolly? Unlikely? Likely? Impossible? Possible?

Look out the window. What is the chance that it will rain later?

Watch the following video about chance words.

Feeling Words

Today we are learning about feeling words. What are feeling words? What are some feeling words that you know? I have some pictures which show and talk about different feeling words.

You now need to use this picture and write a snapshot describing how this character feels. You need to use at least one new word.

funny-face

Your Learning Intention today is for authors to be able to identify and use feeling words.

To be successful, you must:

  • Turn and Talk about how the character is feeling.
  • Write a snapshot about how she is feeling.
  • Use at least one feeling word that is new to you.

Water Saving

Last week we learnt lots of information about water pollution. Turn and talk to someone near you and explain what you have learnt and what you remember about water pollution.

This week, we are going to be learning about saving water. Why do you think we need to try to save water? How can we save water? Today, we have a number of activities which will give you more information about water conservation.

Group 1:

Watch the following videos about water conservation.

Group 2:

iPads. You will be able to look at the following website. If you have trouble reading the website, ask a friend to help you. At the end of this rotation, you need to explain some ways that you can save water.

https://www3.epa.gov/watersense/kids/index.html

Group 3:

Make your own rain gauge!

Group 4:

Learn about how much water there actually is in the world.

Group 5:

Investigate what you can do to save water by looking at the pictures and writing about what you can see and what you have read. Explain why you think it is important to save water. Explain where we can save water.

Group 6:

Read the text The Waterhole by Graeme Base. This text is all about some animals and the jungle and waterhole where they live. You need to write in your book about what you think the big idea/author’s message is. You need to think about how it relates to out topic of water.
